Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion
(BRVO)
A condition associated with high blood pressure
Condition
High blood pressure is the most common condition associated with Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO). Also associated with BRVO is glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
Risk factors
High blood pressure
Symptoms
Symptoms of BRVO are a painless decrease in vision, misty or distorted vision, and prolonged swelling of the macula
Treatment
There is no known cure for BRVO. It is important to find out what caused the blockage. Your ophthalmologist may recommend a period of observation, since bleeding and excess fluid may subside naturally. Depending on how damaged the veins are, laser surgery may reduce the swelling and bleeding, and improve vision.
