Nonproliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR)

Condition

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which diabetes causes damage to the blood vessels in the retina. Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), also known as background retinopathy, is an early stage of diabetic retinopathy. In NPDR, retinal blood vessels leak blood or fluid, causing the retina to swell or form deposits called exudates.

Symptoms

Mild NPDR is common among people with diabetes, and does not usually affect vision. Vision can be affected when macular edema and/or macular ischemia occurs.

Treatment

Early detection is key to the successful treatment of diabetic retinopathy and other diabetic related eye conditions.
